In its heyday Owen Street was home to nearly 100 shops which catered for every need but from the late 1960s decline set in and the street was largely demolished in the early 1980s. The talk will take a nostalgic look at the old street to revive memories of the likes of Eade's Chemists, Southan Bros' Furnishings, Jones's Outfitters, Green's Butchers, George's Fish & Chips and the Black Cock Inn.

Sunday 4 May 12:30pm @ Coronation Gardens
Event for Tipton Slasher Statue - 21st Anniversary
A date for your diary is Sunday 4 May 2014. The venue is Coronation Gardens (opposite the Fountain pub in Owen St, Tipton). Starts at 12.30pm with a grand opening by the Sandwell Mayor being one of the guests of honour.
There will be period boxing re-enactments, live entertainment, historical slideshows, talks on the Tipton Slasher, canal boat rides, a launch of the Tipton Slasher book by Tom Langley and refreshments .... much more besides.
It has been 21 years since the Tipton Slasher statue was first unveiled and it was decided the occasion should be remembered. The Tipton Community Association, Tipton and Coseley Building Society, Tipton Civic Society and Black Country Society are working together to make this event a fun-packed afternoon for all the family. Whilst the emphasis is on Tipton all are welcome as the memory and heritage of William Perry is important across the whole of the Black Country.
You will be able to hear about the story of the statue, the latest research on the man and his life, and see a slideshow presentation about the places that were key to his life. The book launch is for what is effectively a brand new book, launched by the Black Country Society, based on Tom Langley's long out-of-print work on this most famous of Black Country sportsmen.
For the children there will be maypole dancing and free rides on a canal boat, courtesy of Dudley Canal Trust. More has yet to be announced and I will be updating this page as events are confirmed. It promises to be a fantastic afternoon.
Can anyone reading this please share with as many Black Country groups as they are able - we want to get the message out far and wide.
